Hey guys, this is our first post. We hope that you will enjoy this blog and will use it to learn some history. So our first post constitutes a question: Was Tiberius a good emperor?
Certainly I would argue that he wasn’t particularly good because he did not do anything for the good of the common masses rather lead a quiet and apathetic life on Italian peninsula and Caprea. However, my view might be influence by Suetonius’ portrayal of him which isn’t favourable for Tiberius at all. Yet, one of my ninja monkeys asserts that he was neither good or bad emperor, he remained the empire as it was left by Augustus, hence his lack of expansion.
Jamie, my co-writer thinks that he was a good emperor because, despite being the reluctant heir of Augustus he still did an admirable job of maintaining the empire’s borders and continuing the corn supply, with Tacitus commenting that there was more supply than under Augustus. His relationship with the plebeians and his Machiavellian exploitation of his adopted son Germanicus and Piso was unforgivable and suggests paranoia about is position.
So nethertheless he had some good points and bad points, it is up to you to make your mind up on him but bear in mind that his habits were that of a usual roman aristocrat
Jamie, and Damian…sign off.
